Welcome Van Gogh Class 2018-19

Ms Smith

(Year Five)

We have made a brilliant start to the school year with our first two whole school Learning Journey themes of 'New Beginnings' and 'Red'.  See the gallery section of the school website to view some great photographs from across the school.

I am delighted to confirm that Year Five will be taking part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival this year.  The children will be learning a Shakespeare play in detail (probably Julius Ceasar) and then working alongside professional actiors to produce their own version of the play.  We will be performing at the RADA studios in the West End in late November.

Additionally our Year Five Learning Journey now takes us off in a scientific direction for about four weeks and we explore 'Messy Mixtures'.  This is based around some learning about solids and liquids.  Exploring how we can desolve, freeze and change states of solids to liquids, it's very much a contuation of learning from Year Four.   Our WOW lesson at the start of the Learning Journey will give the children some ideas and inspiration.

The next short Learning Journey which will start at the beginning of November will have History and Geography related theme and is called 'The Attack of the Vikings'.  This of course will start with a brainstorming activity with the children to see what direction our learning will take! I suspect we may look at the Viking Invasions, Battles, significant Viking heros and probably something gruesome!

The final Learning Journey of the Autumn Term will be 'Children's Choice'.  I can't wait to see what they decide to learn about.

Guidance for Home Learning:

Reading: We ask parents to read with children every evening for 15 minutes - reading is the most important and valuable thing you can do with your child are this stage of their learning. You can read to them, share a book, get them to predict what will happen in a story or get them to decribe a story's events. You can also get your child to read to you for about 10 minutes everyday.

MyMaths: Each week children will be given Maths homework using an online system called Mymaths. Children have their own login and should complete the online homework set by the teachers. They can have several attempts at the homework and also watch a follow up lesson if they need additioonal support. It's vitally important that the children know all their timestables up to 12x12 by the beginning of Year Five.
